BEL and DRDO Speed Up Work on Desi S-400 Air Defense System ‘Project Kusha’

In a big boost to India’s defence self-reliance, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are moving rapidly on Project Kusha — an ambitious, homegrown long-range surface-to-air missile system. Often referred to as the ‘Desi S-400’, the project draws comparisons with Russia’s powerful S-400 due to its advanced capabilities.
BEL, a key public sector defense company, is working hand-in-hand with DRDO to develop a cutting-edge air defense system designed to detect and neutralize a variety of aerial threats. These include stealth jets, drones, and cruise missiles, with the system expected to have a range of up to 350 kilometers.
Currently, Project Kusha is in its development phase, with BEL leading the prototype work. The initial version of the system is projected to be ready within 12 to 18 months. Once completed, it will go through a series of user trials lasting up to 36 months, during which the system’s performance will be thoroughly evaluated under different combat conditions.
This initiative falls squarely under the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, aimed at cutting reliance on foreign defense imports. With regional threats evolving and the need for reliable airspace security growing, Project Kusha is seen as a critical step forward in building indigenous defense infrastructure.
Defense experts believe that once operational, Project Kusha will significantly enhance India’s air defense network, offering a locally-built solution to modern warfare challenges. It also demonstrates India’s ability to create high-end military technology through homegrown talent and resources.
The BEL-DRDO partnership reflects a broader shift towards innovation-led defense manufacturing in India. As development progresses, Project Kusha is shaping up to be a landmark achievement in the country’s journey toward strategic independence and technological strength.
